my japan: school lunch

posted in: Japan, JET | 4

Each month, my japan will feature themed photos submitted by current JET participants. This is what a few of our current JETs have on their plate this month.

The students always seem more excited than I am for squid-on-a-stick day!

This fish (to put it nicely) is definitely not one of my favorites; the joys of trying new things!

I forgot to send in my picture of nattō! My JTE counterpart surprised me one day with a small styrofoam container he pulled out of the fridge, and after showing me how to get it to the right consistency (stirring vigorously with chopsticks), he told me to “enjoy” the contents. It tasted vaguely like old coffee, but was actually pretty good with the accompanying packet of spicy mustard.

Now you can impress a lot of Japanese people by eating natto. I’m sure you’ll get more of “Can you eat natto?” question.

I like this new section! A lot of my kyushoku involved biting into things that looked pretty out there, but didn’t taste too bad. Even eating the crunchy fish whole, mouths agape and everything. 🙂
