MEXT Scholorship Information

This is a reminder that the deadline for submitting an application for the 2012 MEXT Scholarship is Wednesday, June 22nd.  Please see details below.

NOTE: ONLY residents of the District of Columbia may apply through the Embassy of Japan. If you are a resident of another state, you must apply through the Consulate General of Japan responsible for your jurisdiction.

The Research Student Scholarship is a one-and-a-half to two-year scholarship for students with undergraduate degrees to study a subject of their choosing at a graduate school in Japan. Benefits of the program include a monthly allowance of 152,000 yen (approx. $1850 at current exchange rate) per month; transportation to and from Japan; and university tuition. To qualify, you must be a citizen of the United States, have been born on or after April 2, 1977, and should be in good health. Proposed field of study must be the field, or any related field, that the applicant studied at a previous university. Applicants must be able to arrive in Japan between April 1-7 or between October 1-7, 2012.  Candidates should have an intermediate level of proficiency in Japanese.
*Be sure to list your JET Program experience on your application under the section that asks about your prior visits to Japan.

IMPORTANT: Currently, interviews are scheduled to be conducted at the Embassy of Japan on Thursday and Friday, June 30th and July 1st. If your permanent residence is Washington, DC, you must apply through our Embassy and interview here – there are no other interview location choices.
